Summary

Here are some steps for converting projects originally configured for DAE/DTDM to Core Audio in Logic Pro 8.

Products Affected

Logic Pro 8

Background - What to expect

  • All DTDM data will be converted, including recordings, plug-ins, MIDI regions for Software Instruments and automation.
  • DAE plug-ins will not be converted, they are not compatible with Core Audio.
  • Automation on DAE tracks will not be converted, it is not compatible with Core Audio, with the exception of volume and pan automation for EXS24TDM tracks (see below).
  • EXS24TDM instruments can be reloaded.

Converting projects that use both DAE and DTDM

Before you start this process, it's highly recommended that Universal Track Mode be switched off for DTDM. To do so, choose Logic Pro > Preferences > Audio > Devices > Direct TDM and uncheck Universal Track Mode.

  1. Open the project you wish to convert.
  2. In the Environment, select all of the DAE Aux (except those using EXS24TDM), Output and Master Fader objects and delete them. These objects will not be used in the converted project.
  3. For any stereo DAE channel strips, change the format from stereo to mono, using the Format button at the lower left of the channel strip. You can change these back to stereo later.
  4. Select the DAE audio channel strips and change the "Dev" setting from "DAE" to "DTDM". Note that the "Cha" settings for these tracks will remain the same, which means they are likely to become duplicates of existing DTDM audio tracks. For example, DAE track 1 will become DTDM track 1. Change the "Cha" setting for the converted DAE tracks so they are higher than any of the already used DTDM tracks.
  5. Relink any stereo tracks.
  6. If your project includes any EXS24TDM tracks, save each used instrument as a plug-in setting. It may be helpful to use the same name for the track and the setting.
  7. For each EXS24TDM track, select all the regions. Set the track automation view to Volume and choose Options > Track Automation > Move Current Track Automation Data to Region. Set the track automation view to Pan and again choose Options > Track Automation > Move Current Track Automation Data to Region. (If automation between regions matters, e.g. on delayed signals, you may need to first choose Region > Tie Regions by Length Change.
  8. Save the project with a different name and close it.

Now you have a project ready for conversion.

  1. Choose Logic > Preferences > Audio > Devices and disable both DAE and DTDM.
  2. Click on the Core Audio tab of the Devices window and enable Core Audio. Be sure that Universal Track Mode is not enabled.
  3. Click Apply Changes to switch the device settings.
  4. Open the project from the earlier steps. You will be asked whether Logic should automatically convert it to Core Audio. Click Yes.

After conversion:

  • All DTDM audio tracks will be converted to Core Audio with all automation and plug-ins intact.
  • All DAE tracks will be converted to Core Audio with audio regions in place, but without plug-ins or automation.
  • All EXS24TDM tracks will show up as Aux channels with the original MIDI regions in place. Change them to Instrument tracks, insert an EXS 24 and load the presets you created earlier.

Converting projects that contain only DAE tracks to Core Audio

  1. Choose Logic Pro > Preferences > Audio > Devices > Direct TDM and enable Direct TDM. Be sure that Universal Track Mode is not enabled. Click Apply Changes to launch the Direct TDM driver.
  2. Open the project you wish to convert.
  3. Unlink any stereo DAE tracks (you can relink them later).
  4. Select the DAE track faders and change the "Dev" setting from "DAE" to "DTDM".
  8. Save the project with a different name and close it.
