A broadband Internet connection is required to play back iTunes Store content on your Apple TV. If the connection to the Internet is not working, Apple TV may display error messages the first time you attempt to play iTunes Store purchases or rentals. To play your iTunes Store purchases and rentals with Apple TV, your computer with iTunes and your Apple TV must be connected to the Internet to allow the authorization process to complete. One way to test to see that Apple TV has direct access to the Internet is to play a theatrical trailer (select Movies > Trailers for software version 2.0, or Movies > Theatrical Trailers for software version 1.x, and then select a trailer to play).
