Apple TV (1st generation): Adding podcasts via iTunes

Summary

In addition to getting podcasts from the Internet directly on Apple TV (1st generation), you can also use Apple TV (1st generation) to view or listen to podcasts that are stored in your iTunes library.

Most podcasts are free, and you can download or subscribe to them from the iTunes Store. You do not need an iTunes Store account to download or subscribe to podcasts.

This article assumes that you have completed Apple TV (1st generation) setup, including the iTunes connection to Apple TV (1st generation). If not, please see the Fast Start for Apple TV (1st generation).

The settings for adding podcasts to Apple TV (1st generation) are not related  to the settings for adding music. Podcast settings don't affect song settings, and vice-versa. Set iTunes to automatically sync all podcasts or selected podcasts.

To set iTunes to automatically sync podcasts

  1. In iTunes, select the Apple TV icon in the Devices list.
  2. Click the Podcasts tab.
  3. In the Podcasts pane, select "Sync... episodes of" and choose the number of episodes you want in the pop-up menu.
  4. Click "All podcasts" or "Selected podcasts." If you click "Selected podcasts," also select the podcasts in the list that you want to sync.

  5. Click Apply.

You can also stream podcasts from an iTunes library that you've set up for streaming.
 

To set up streaming content to Apple TV (1st generation)

  1. Open iTunes on the computer you want to stream from.
  2. Open Apple TV, choose Sources from the main menu.
  3. Choose "Connect to New iTunes" and make a note of the passcode displayed.
  4. In iTunes, select the Apple TV icon with "Click to set up" next to it.
  5. Enter the passcode. While content is being streamed, the computer must remain on and iTunes must remain open.

Note: The time it takes to begin viewing streaming content on Apple TV (1st generation) is dependent upon your local network speed.
