Aperture 2: Some tips on Baseline DNG support

Summary

Aperture 2 can decode DNG files from almost any camera, whether or not the camera's RAW format is directly supported. Here are some points to keep in mind:

Products Affected

Aperture 2.X, Foveon, Bayer

  • When you work with DNG images, Aperture adjusts the RAW data, so most of the adjustments offered with natively supported RAW formats are available. However, because the decoding offered with directly supported cameras is tailored for each camera's RAW format, the basic decode for natively supported images may be better than with DNG images.
  • The Auto Noise Compensation adjustment under Raw Fine Tuning is not available with DNG images. Auto Noise Compensation requires specific knowledge of the camera's sensor characteristics in combination with the ISO value of the image. DNG images do not provide the needed sensor information.
  • The Baseline DNG support in Aperture 2 does not include Linear DNG images. Only RAW DNG is supported.
  • DNG images created by cameras with Foveon sensors are not supported. The image data format with Foveon sensors is very different from that of the Bayer sensors used by the vast majority of cameras.
