Archived - Macintosh Restore DVD: How to install iMovie, iPhoto, or iTunes using Mac OS X Software Install

This document explains how to install iMovie, iPhoto, and iTunes on computers that include a single Mac OS X Software Install and Restore DVD disc.

This article has been archived and is no longer updated by Apple.

For Mac OS X v10.5 and later

  • Insert the Applications installation disc and double-click the Install Bundled Software icon. If your computer came with an iLife installation disc, or you purchased a newer version of iLife, insert that disc instead.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions. Then, in the Installation Type pane, click Customize.
  • Click the disclosure triangle next to Bundled Applications, select the checkbox next to the application you want to install, then click Install.

Earlier versions of Mac OS X

Some computers include the iLife '04 Install CD and DVD. Use these discs if they came with your computer.

Other computers include iMovie 4 and iPhoto 4 on the Mac OS X v10.3.3 Install disc and GarageBand and iDVD 4 on the computer's restore discs.
In this case:

  • You can install iMovie, iPhoto, and iTunes from these Mac OS X install discs.
  • You can install GarageBand and iDVD using the computer restore discs.
  • The latest version of iTunes is available from the iTunes website or via Software Update. iTunes 9.2.1 is available for Mac OS X 10.4.11. iTunes 8.2.1 is available for G3 Macs.

Tip: Regardless of which discs you reinstall from, be sure to run Software Update after reinstalling these applications to ensure that available updates to these applications are applied.

Earlier versions

If you need to reinstall iMovie, iPhoto, or iTunes for any reason, you can use the original installation disc, and earlier copy of iLife, or purchase iLife '04. iLife '04 includes iMovie, iPhoto, iTunes, GarageBand and iDVD. For more information on iLife, see the iLife website. Earlier versions of iLife did not include GarageBand.

iMovie, iPhoto, and iTunes can be installed without performing a restoration on the following computers that include a single Mac OS X Software Install and Restore DVD disc:

  • Power Mac G4 (FW 800)
  • PowerBook G4 (12-Inch)
  • PowerBook G4 (867 MHz/1 GHz)
  • iMac (17-inch 1GHz)
  • eMac (USB 2.0)

Follow these steps to reinstall iMovie, iPhoto, and iTunes from your Restore DVD disc:

Note:  As the additional applications cannot be selectively installed, this will reinstall iMovie, iPhoto, iTunes, Acrobat Reader, iCal, and iSync.

Insert the Software Install and Restore DVD disc. Do not start up the computer from this disc.

  1. From the Go menu, choose Go to Folder.
  2. Do one of the following, depending on the type of computer the Restore DVD disc is for:
    • Power Mac G4 (FW 800) computer, type or copy and paste: /Volumes/PowerMac G4 Software/System/Installation/Packages
    • PowerBook G4 (12-Inch) computer, type or copy and paste: /Volumes/PowerBook Software/System/Installation/Packages
    • PowerBook G4 (867 MHz/1 GHz) computer, type or copy and paste: /Volumes/PowerBook G4 Software/System/Installation/Packages
    • iMac (17-inch 1GHz) computer, type or copy and paste: /Volumes/iMac Software/System/Installation/Packages
    • eMac (USB 2.0) computer, type or copy and paste:
      /Volumes/eMac Restore DVD/System/Installation/Packages/

Tip: Using a different computer? You can figure out what the pathname should be with this convention:
    /Volumes/{name of the Restore disc}/System/Installation/Packages

For example, with an iMac G5's Mac OS X Install Disc 1, the pathname would be:
    /Volumes/Mac OS X Install Disc 1/System/Installation/Packages
  3. Press Return. The Packages window appears.
  4. Double-click the AdditionalApplications.pkg to begin the installation.
  5. Authenticate by entering your account password when prompted.
  6. Select the destination volume that contains Mac OS X 10.2.
  7. Click Continue. The selected software installs.

Additional Information

Note: Some installed packages may not be available until the computer is restarted.
