Mac OS X 10.4, iChat: "Insufficient bandwidth" messages

Summary

Under certain circumstances, you may be unable to start or maintain an audio or video chat using iChat 3.0 (included with Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" and Mac OS Server 10.4) due to "insufficient bandwidth." This can occur even though the previous version of iChat (2.1) worked. You may see one of the following messages, depending on the type of chat you selected:

Disconnected from Video Chat because: There is insufficient bandwidth to maintain the conference.
Disconnected from Audio Chat because: There is insufficient bandwidth to maintain the conference

To resolve the issue:

  • Update to Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later.
  • Make sure QuickTime preference's Streaming Speed is set to your Internet connection's bandwidth. Do not use "Automatic".
