Mac OS X 10.5, Boot Camp: Understanding how Apple localized keyboard character combinations are mapped in Windows

Summary

The characters printed on a keyboard are regionally-specific; designed to be used in one or more cultural regions. Because there are many more characters in a localized language then can be printed on the keys of a keyboard, additional characters can be produced by holding down a combination of other keys.

Products Affected

Boot Camp, Mac OS X 10.5, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator

After installing the Apple drivers for Microsoft Windows included on your Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Install DVD, you can easily determine the key combinations used to access unique characters for the language and region your Apple keyboard is designed to support.

One way is to download an application from Microsoft's website named Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator that will allow you to view any of the supported Apple specific keyboard layouts that were installed in Windows, on your Intel-based Mac.

Keyboards drivers designed to work with Apple keyboards can be identified by their name. To see the list, install and run Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator in Windows. Choose File > Load Existing Keyboard... and select the keyboard you want to see. Locate the country name in the keyboard list which is followed by the word (Apple) in parenthesis.

Following the instructions provided with the application, you can print images of the keyboard in various shifted states which can then be referenced as needed.
