iPod: How to play songs while charging

Learn how you can play songs from iPod while it is charging.

You can charge your iPod using the Apple iPod USB Power Adapter or you use the USB iPod Dock Connector cable to connect and charge your iPod. iPod shuffle (2nd generation) must be charged via its dock.

When charging iPod using the iPod Power Adapter you can play music just as if the charger was not connected. When your iPod is connected to your computer, its buttons will no longer work and the message “Do not disconnect” will appear on the display.

You can, however, still play songs from your iPod through your computer. Follow these steps:

  1. Connect iPod to your computer using the included USB 2.0 cable.
  2. Open iTunes.
  3. Select iPod in the Source list.
  4. In the iPod Summary page, scroll to the Options section and make sure to check off “Manually manage music”.
  5. Click Apply.

You can now browse through your iPod’s library or playlist and select any song to play through your computer.
