Archived - How to Uninstall QuickTime on a Macintosh

Learn how to uninstall QuickTime 3, QuickTime 4, QuickTime 5, and QuickTime 6 on a Macintosh. If you have a Windows PC, there are steps just for you.

Tip: Although the graphics contained in this document show QuickTime 5, the uninstall process is similar for QuickTime 3, QuickTime 4, and QuickTime 6. See the related documents below for some specific QuickTime 6 information.

If you have Mac OS X, don't try to follow these steps. Some versions of Mac OS X and QuickTime have "reinstallers" that help install a previous version of QuickTime. Click here to search for these. Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger includes QuickTime 7. Earlier versions of QuickTime and QuickTime Pro are not supported with Mac OS X 10.4.

  1. Open the QuickTime Installer. If you don't have a copy of the installer, you can download it from the QuickTime webpage. The Welcome to QuickTime window appears:

  2. Click Continue. The License window appears:

  3. Click Agree. The Choose Installation Type window appears.

  4. Click the Custom option, then click Continue. The QuickTime Installer window appears:

  5. Choose Uninstall from the pop-up menu at the top and then click Uninstall. The following dialog box appears:

  6. Click Continue. A status bar shows the progress of the uninstall.

  7. When finished, the following alert box appears:

  8. Click OK and then quit the installer. The QuickTime installer successfully removes everything except for the Sound Manager extension. You must open the Extensions folder and drag the Sound Manager extension to the Trash if you wish to remove it.

  9. At this point, you should either reinstall QuickTime 5 or an earlier version since removing the Sound Manager may cause issues with applications that rely on it.
