iTunes: How to set the play order of songs on an MP3 CD

Learn how to set the play order of songs on an MP3 CD using iTunes.

Most CD players that can play MP3 CDs play songs in alphabetical order. This means that the play order is according to song title, and not according to the track order on an Audio CD, or the song order in your iTunes playlists. iTunes, however, lets you burn MP3 CDs that maintain your playlist order--in three variations.

How to burn by playlist order

  1. Create your playlist.
  2. Click "Song" to sort the playlist by song.
  3. Make sure the songs are in the order you want to hear them on the CD.
  4. Click Burn CD.
  5. Insert a blank CD and burn the disc.

iTunes adds the song's playlist number to the beginning of each title. That way, the MP3 player plays the songs in alphabetical, and numerical order. Example: <track number>.<song title>.mp3.

How to burn by album

You can create an MP3 CD that organizes songs into folders that represent an entire album. This allows you to duplicate the play order of an album on an audio CD, for example. Follow these steps:

  1. Create your playlist.
  2. Click "Album" to sort the playlist by album.
  3. The songs' play order should appear as it does on the original album. If not:
    1. Select a song.
    2. Choose Get Info from the File menu.
    3. Click the Tags tab.
    4. Modify the Track Number fields to arrange the play order.
    5. Repeat as needed.
  4. Click Burn CD.
  5. Insert a blank CD and burn the disc.

Each album has its own folder and the songs in that folder have the song number added to the beginning of their filenames as described above. Figure 2 illustrates an MP3 CD burned by album order as it appears in the Finder.

Create your playlist.

  1. Click "Artist" to sort the playlist by artist.
  2. Each artist's songs are sorted by album. The songs' play order should appear as it does on the original album. If not:
    1. Select a song.
    2. Choose Get Info from the File menu.
    3. Click the Tags tab.
    4. Modify the Track Number fields to arrange the play order.
    5. Repeat as needed.
  3. Click Burn CD.
  4. Insert a blank CD and burn the disc.

Each artist has a folder, and each artist's folder has a subfolder for each album with the songs ordered as described above. Figure 3 illustrates an MP3 CD burned by artist as it appears in the Finder.
