Archived - iPod: Compatible photo formats

If you have an iPod with color display (including iPod photo, iPod nano, and Fifth Generation iPod), you can sync photos1 to your iPod in many file formats, though the list varies a little between Mac and PC.

This article has been archived and is no longer updated by Apple.

On the Mac, iTunes 4.72 and later can recognize these file formats from your iPhoto Library:

JPG, JPEG, TIFF, PICT, GIF, PNG, JPG2000 or JP2, PSD, SGI, and BMP

On Windows, iTunes 4.72 can recognize these file formats from Adobe Photoshop Album and Adobe Photoshop Elements:

JPG , JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIF, TIFF, PSD, SGI, and PNG

Using the Pick Folder option, it can recognize the same file formats as Adobe Photoshop Album/Elements.

Notes

  1. Photo Sync works in one direction, from iTunes to the iPod, not the other way.
  2. iPod nano requires iTunes 4.9 or later. Fifth Generation iPod requires iTunes 6 or later.
  3. For information on adding artwork to songs in iTunes, see iTunes Help.
