Xsan 1.4 or earlier: All controllers must be online when making SAN configuration changes

Summary

In a storage area network (SAN) with multiple metadata controllers (MDCs), if one or more controllers are down while you are reconfiguring the SAN, those controllers may not synchronize with the updated configuration when they come back online.

To avoid this issue, make sure that all MDCs are up and available on the SAN before performing any SAN reconfiguration.

If you have an MDC that is out-of-sync with other MDCs on the SAN:

  1. Downgrade it to a client.
  2. Save.
  3. Promote it to an MDC again.
     

Note: In some circumstances you may be unable to change the role of an out-of-sync MDC. In such a case, uninstall and then reinstall Xsan on that MDC.
