iMac G5 (iSight): Installing and replacing memory (RAM)
Summary
iMac G5 (iSight) comes with a 512 MB DDR2 SDRAM module built into the logic board that can't be removed or replaced. It also has one additional RAM slot that can support up to 2 GB of memory (you can install a 512 MB, 1 GB, or 2 GB module in this slot). You must use a memory module (DIMM) that meets these criteria:
- PC2-4200
- unbuffered
- nonparity
- 240-pin
- 533 MHz
- DDR2 SDRAM
DIMMs that have any of the following features are not supported in the iMac G5 (iSight):
- registered or buffered
- PLLs
- ECC
- parity
- EDO RAM
Products Affected
iMac G5 (20-Inch iSight), iMac G5 (17-Inch iSight)
To install memory into the RAM slot, follow these instructions:
- Turn off your computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu.
- Disconnect all cables and the power cord from your computer.
- Place a soft, clean towel or cloth on your desk or work surface to prevent scratching the LCD display. Hold the sides of the computer and carefully lay the computer face down.
- Using a Philips screwdriver, remove the RAM access door from the bottom of the computer as shown below.

Locate RAM access door

Remove screws
and remove door - Inside the gap, locate and pull out the two hoops as shown. These hoops lower the DIMM, if installed, or make the DIMM connector accessible.
- Insert your new RAM DIMM into the slot, making sure to orient the module correctly. (DIMMs are keyed with a little notch just off from center—note which side the notch should be aligned.) Once you've inserted it, press the DIMM up into the slot. The hoops will retract inside of the machine (see below).

Orient RAM correctly

Insert RAM into DIMM connector

Press DIMM into slot - Once you've installed the DIMM, reinstall the RAM access door.
- Return your iMac to its usual upright position and reconnect the power cord and any other cables. Then start up your iMac and enjoy!
