Promise VTrak: Controller replacement procedure

Summary

If a Promise VTrak RAID Head’s Controller Module is replaced for any reason, and if a SAS-Connected Expansion Chassis is connected to the RAID Head, the following steps should be taken when replacing the Controller Module.

Power-down instructions

The following steps should be taken only if the RAID Head can be powered down during the Controller Module replacement procedure.

  1. Shut the RAID Head and SAS-Connected Expansion chassis as described in this article.
  2. Remove the SAS-cable from the RAID Head Controller Module that is to be replaced.
  3. Remove the RAID Head Controller Module from the RAID Head Chassis.
  4. Install the replacement Controller Module in the RAID Head Chassis.
  5. Connect the SAS-cable to the RAID Head Controller Module.
  6. Start up the RAID Head and SAS-Connected Expansion chassis as in this article.

Hot-swap instructions

The following steps should be taken only if the RAID Head cannot be powered down during the Controller Module replacement procedure.

  1. Remove the SAS-cable from the RAID Head Controller Module that is to be replaced.
  2. Remove the RAID Head Controller Module from the RAID Head Chassis.
  3. Install the replacement Controller Module in the RAID Head Chassis.
  4. Within 30 seconds of replacing the Controller Module, connect the SAS-cable to the RAID Head Controller Module.

Note: If the SAS-cable is not connected to the RAID Head Controller Module within 30 seconds, the Controller Module will enter Maintenance Mode.

How to determine if a Promise VTrak is in Maintenance Mode

  1. After replacing a Controller Module, connect to the VTrak RAID via the WebPAM PROe administration tool. If you are not certain what IP Address is assigned to the Promise RAID, refer to the Product Manual. If an alert appears in your web browser, see this article.
  2. Authenticate when prompted. If you are not certain what administrator name and password is assigned to the Promise RAID, refer to the Product Manual.
  3. Note the Controller Module status in the left column. If the status is "Not Accessible", then the Controller Module may be in Maintenance Mode.

 

How to exit Maintenance Mode

  1. Connect to the VTrak RAID via Telnet or a serial connection. For instructions on connecting to the VTrak RAID via Telnet or a serial connection, refer to the Product Manual.
  2. Issue the following command:

    $ maintenance -a exit
  3. Reference WebPAM PROe administration tool to verify that the Controller Module is now accessible.
