Remote app can be downloaded from the iTunes Store using the App Store on iPhone, iPad or iPod touch as well as with iTunes on your Mac or PC. For information about the features of Remote app, visit www.apple.com/itunes/remote/.

System Requirements

Remote app requires iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iOS 5 or later and one of the following:

  • Apple TV
  • iTunes 9.2.1 or later

Note: You can confirm iOS system requirements using the specifications provided on the Remote app product page, Remote for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store. For best performance ensure your iOS device, Apple TV, and iTunes are up to date.

Setting up Remote app

Remote app 2.0 or later uses Home Sharing for setup and control with iTunes 10.0.1 and/or Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation).

iTunes (10.0.1 or later)

  1. Open iTunes on your Mac or PC.
  2. iTunes 11 or newer: Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes by going to File > Home Sharing> Turn on Home Sharing.
    iTunes 10.7 or older: Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes by going to Advanced > Turn on Home Sharing.
  3. Connect iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to a Wi-Fi network that is connected to the local network that your Mac or PC is also connected to.
  4. Open the Remote app (software version 2.0 or later) on your mobile device.
  5. Turn on Home Sharing in the Remote Settings screen. Make sure to sign into the same Home Sharing account you used to sign in to from iTunes on your computer.

Once Home sharing is enabled for both your computer and your mobile device, Remote app will be be able to view and control audio and video playback in your iTunes library.

Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation)

  1. Connect iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to a Wi-Fi network that is connected to the local network that your Apple TV is also connected to.
  2. On Apple TV, select Settings from the main menu, then select General > Remotes > Remote App.
  3. If your Home Sharing account is not set up on your Apple TV, you will be prompted to enable Home Sharing first. (For more information about setting up Home sharing on your Apple TV, read this article.)
  4. Open the Remote app on your mobile device.
  5. Select your Apple TV from the Remote app settings screen.

Remote app will be paired with Apple TV and you can begin browsing Apple TV using Remote app. You can also browse and play from all iTunes libraries that are listed in the Computers section of your Apple TV from within the Remote app. 

If you're running iTunes software version 9.2.1 or earlier, or have an Apple TV (1st generation), Remote app must be paired with your iTunes library or Apple TV using a pin-based pairing method in order to control content playback. Follow the instructions below to pair Remote app with iTunes (9.2.1 or earlier) on your computer, or with your Apple TV (1st generation).

iTunes (9.2.1 or earlier)

  1. Open iTunes on your Mac or PC.
  2. Connect iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to a Wi-Fi network that is connected to the local network that your Mac or PC is also connected to.
  3. Open the Remote app on your mobile device.
  4. Select Add an iTunes Library in the Remote settings screen.
  5. Remote app will display a 4 digit passcode. In iTunes select the name of your iPhone or iPod touch in the Devices list and enter the passcode.

Remote app will be paired with iTunes and you can begin browsing your library using Remote app and select a piece of content to play.

Apple TV (1st generation)

  1. Connect iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to a Wi-Fi network that is connected to the local network that your Apple TV also connected to.
  2. Open the Remote app on your mobile device.
  3. Select Add an iTunes Library in the Remote settings screen. Remote will then display a 4 digit passcode.
  4. On Apple TV, select Settings from the main menu, select General and then Remotes.
  5. Select the name of your iPhone or iPod touch.
  6. Enter the 4 digit passcode. Use the volume up/down keys on the Apple Remote (Infrared) to change the number that is displayed and the track next/back keys to switch digits.
  7. Click Done.

Remote app will be paired with Apple TV and you can begin browsing your library using Remote and select a piece of content to play.

Additional Information

  • Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation) uses Home Sharing to stream audio and video content from your iTunes library on your computer to your HDTV. If your Apple TV is connected to your personal iTunes libraries via Home Sharing, Remote app will allow you to also browse and play from all iTunes libraries that are listed in the Computers section of your Apple TV from within the app itself. You can also select between available speakers from Remote app to further enhance your audio and video experience.
