Archived - Power Mac G4: Display Compatibility

This article provides compatibility information between Apple displays and Power Mac G4 computers. For Power Mac G5 computers, "Power Mac G5: Display Compatibility".

Power Mac G4 computers use a variety of video cards with unique monitor ports. Refer to Figure 1 for images of the three connector types.

  • The Power Mac G4 (PCI Graphics) video card has a VGA port.
  • The initial Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics) video card had a VGA port. Shortly after introduction, a different video card with a VGA port and Digital Visual Interface (DVI) port was introduced.
  • The Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet), Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio), Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver), Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002) and Power Mac G4 Cube video card has a VGA port, and an Apple Display Connector (ADC) port. The ADC carries video, power, and USB signals between the display and computer. See Note 2 and Note 5.
  • The Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) video cards have an ADC port and a DVI-I port (Figure 2) and include a VGA-DVI adapter for connecting to VGA displays. The VGA-DVI adapter cannot be used with the Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics) video card as it uses DVI-D which does not carry the analog VGA signals the adapter requires. See Note 7.

Notes

1. The Apple Studio Display LCD (DVI) and the Apple Cinema Display can be connected to Power Mac G4 models with an ADC video card using an ADC to DVI adapter available from The Apple Store (http://www.apple.com/store/). Refer to "Display Adapter Table" for more information on identifying video adapters.

2. The Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver) computer has an optional video card that will drive both an ADC and VGA display simultaneously.

3. It is important to use the right adapter. If you use the wrong adapter with a display, some resolutions may be incorrect or missing, and special features of certain models may not be accessible, such as flat panel adjustments, or ColorSync calibration. You may purchase video adapters from an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

4. Apple displays that require an Apple Desktop Bus (ADB) connection to the computer do not have full functionality when connected to Power Mac G4 computers. Video works, but some additional features that depend on ADB, such as on-screen adjustments, do not work.

5. The Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002) video cards support simultaneously connected ADC and VGA displays (nVidia GeForce4 MX, GeForce4 Ti, and ATI Radeon 7500).

6. The Power Mac G4 Cube computer must have a Nvidia Geforce 2MX graphics card to be compatible with the Apple Cinema Display HD or Apple Cinema Display (20-inch).
The Power Mac G4 - (Gigabit Ethernet) video card does not support the Apple Cinema Display HD or Apple Cinema Display (20-inch) unless the original video card is updated to one that meets the specification for the display.

7. The Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) video cards support simultaneously connected ADC and DVI displays (nVidia GeForce4 MX, GeForce4 Ti, and ATI Radeon 9000). Also supported are two ADC displays with the Apple DVI to ADC Adapter (sold separately) or one ADC and one VGA display (with included DVI to VGA adapter). Refer to: "Display Adapter Table" for more information on identifying video adapters.
