Bluetooth: How to set up your Apple Wireless Keyboard

Setting up the Apple Wireless Keyboard (2009) and Apple Wireless Keyboard (2007)
Check system requirements
See which version of Mac OS X your computer has by choosing About This Mac from the Apple () menu. For Mac OS X v10.5.8, you will also the most recent keyboard software update. The aluminum Apple Wireless Keyboard (2009) will not work with Mac OS X v10.5.7 and earlier.
Check Bluetooth
Make sure Bluetooth is turned on and your computer is discoverable. You can do this by choosing System Preferences from the Apple () menu, then choosing Bluetooth from the View menu. If you don’t see Bluetooth in the View menu, your computer does not have a built-in Bluetooth module. Some external USB Bluetooth adapters may work with your computer even if it does not feature this capability. Check with the manufacturer for compatibility with Apple products.
Set up
To set up the aluminum Apple Wireless Keyboard, follow these steps:
- If your computer is using Mac OS X v10.5.8, you need the keyboard software update.
- Install the batteries.
- Use a coin to remove the battery compartment cover.
- Slide two batteries into the battery compartment as shown below. Note: The aluminum Apple Wireless Keyboard (2007) uses 3 batteries.
- Replace the battery compartment cover and leave the keyboard turned off.


- Open Keyboard System Preferences by choosing System Preferences from the Apple () menu, then choosing Keyboard from the View menu.
- Click the ‘Setup Bluetooth Keyboard’ button in the lower right-hand corner of the Keyboard Preference pane.
- Turn on the keyboard. The light above the power switch should begin to flash.

- After 15-30 seconds, the keyboard's name should appear in the preferences Search pane.
- Click Continue. The Setup Assistant will try to pair with the keyboard.
- When the Setup Assistant prompts you to do so, type the passkey shown in the Setup Assistant on the Apple Wireless Keyboard. Press the Return key on the keyboard when you are finished.
- Once the computer and keyboard have successfully paired, the Keyboard System Preferences pane will expand showing all configurable options and battery level in the lower left-hand corner.
You should now be able to use your aluminum Apple Wireless Keyboard.
Note: If the light on the top-right corner of the keyboard does not glow or flash when you turn on the keyboard, make sure the batteries are properly charged and installed. For the aluminum Apple Wireless Keyboard (2007), confirm that you have Mac OS X v10.4.10 or later installed and the keyboard software update installed. If using Mac OS X 10.5.4 or later the keyboard software update is not needed.
Setting up other Apple Wireless Keyboard devices
Check system requirements
See which version of Mac OS X your computer has by choosing About This Mac from the Apple () menu. The Apple Wireless Keyboard requires Mac OS X v10.3 or later. If you have a previous version, you should update your computer's software.
Check Bluetooth

Set up
To set up the Apple Wireless Keyboard, follow these steps:
- Install the Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mouse software that came with the keyboard. Insert the CD, double-click the installer, and follow the onscreen instructions.
- Turn the keyboard over, install the batteries as illustrated below and replace the battery cover.

- Open the Bluetooth Setup Assistant.
- Click Continue.
- At the Select Device Type panel, select Keyboard. Do not click Continue yet.
- Using the power switch on the bottom of the keyboard, turn the keyboard on. The light above the power switch should begin to flash.
- Click Continue. The keyboard's name should appear in the device list of the Search pane.
- Select the keyboard in the Setup Assistant listing, then click Continue. The Setup Assistant will try to pair with the keyboard.
- When the Setup Assistant prompts you to do so, type the passkey shown in the Setup Assistant on the Apple Wireless Keyboard. Press the Return key on the keyboard when you are finished.
- Once the Setup Assistant confirms the computer and keyboard have successfully paired, click Continue.
- Setup is complete. Click Quit.
You should now be able to use the Apple Wireless Keyboard.
Note: If the light on the bottom of the keyboard does not glow or flash when you turn on the keyboard, make sure the batteries are properly charged and installed.
