About International Calling

  • International Calls:
For information about making international calls, including rates and other charges that may apply, contact your carrier or visit your carrier's website.

  • International Roaming:

You must first enable your carrier's service plan for international roaming. Note: Roaming charges may apply for voice and data. To avoid data roaming charges, make sure Data Roaming is turned off. Contact your carrier for information on roaming charges.

Note: You can only make calls on carriers that have roaming agreements with your iPhone service provider. See the iPhone User Guide for more information.

  • Check your contacts
Make sure you have the complete phone number or each contact, including country code and other prefix codes (such as area code).

Troubleshooting while roaming

When roaming use the following sections to troubleshoot issues you may encounter.

  • Set the carrier network to use:
When roaming, you can set your preferred carrier. In Settings, tap Carrier, then select the carrier network you prefer. Note: This setting appears when you’re outside of your carrier’s network and other local carrier networks are available to use for your phone calls and cellular data connections.

  • Turn Data Roaming on or off:

You can avoid data roaming charges when you're traveling outside your carrier's network by leaving Data Roaming turned off (Data Roaming is turned off by default). To enable email, web browsing, and other data services (where roaming agreements make data roaming possible), turn Data Roaming on.
In Settings, choose General > Network and turn Data Roaming on:

Note: Data roaming charges may be incurred.

  • Issues connecting to a cellular data network while roaming:

If you are having issues connecting to the Cellular Data network, check the icons in the iPhone status bar for 3G, EDGE, or GPRS to determine if you’re connected to a cellular data network:

    3G:

    EDGE:

    GPRS:

    No Data Connection:

If you are not connected to any cellular data network, or unable to use the cellular data network you’re connected to try the following troubleshooting:

    1. Turn 3G off: Choose Settings > General > Network and turn Enable 3G off:

    2. Power your iPhone off and on: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top of your iPhone until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To Turn iPhone on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

    3.  If you are still having issue connecting to the Cellular Data Network, contact your carrier to determine if your carrier has a data roaming agreement with the country you are currently in. For more information see About activating iPhone 3G with a wireless carrier.
  • Issues accessing Visual Voicemail while roaming:
If you are experiencing issues with Visual Voicemail try the following troubleshooting:

    1. Power your iPhone off and on.

    2. See the "Issues connecting to a cellular data network while roaming" steps above.
    3. Try using the troubleshooting in iPhone: Unable to access voicemail.

    4. Contact your carrier to determine if Visual Voicemail is available in the country you are currently in.
