iPod: "Enable Disk Use" dimmed in Preferences

This document explains the "Enable disk use" option in iTunes and under what conditions it is dimmed or enabled, and how to disable it.

The "Enable disk use" option in the iPod preferences in iTunes is enabled, but the text and checkbox are dimmed and you cannot disable the option.

When the "Manually manage songs and playlists" option is enabled, the iPod is in "manual" mode. In this mode, "Enable disk use" is always enabled or turned on. This is a feature of manual mode.

To disable the "Enable disk use" option, select either "Automatically update all songs and playlists" or "Automatically update selected playlists only." Once you have selected either of these two options you will be able to disable the "Enable disk use" option.

In iTunes 7 or later

  1. Connect your iPod to your computer.
  2. When the iPod icon appears in the iTunes Source pane (below Devices), select it.
  3. If the Summary pane isn't showing, click the Summary tab.
  4. Click Enable disk use.
