Summary

You can use your iDisk to share files with anyone on the Internet. Learn how to:

  1. Share your files
  2. Access other Public folders
  3. Password protect your Public folder

Important: Do not give your .Mac account password to anyone. Other people only need to know your member name and Public folder password (if you use one) to access your shared files.

Products Affected

Mac OS X 10.0, Mac OS X 10.1, Mac OS X 10.2, Mac OS X 10.3, Mac OS X 10.4, Mac OS X 10.5, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98, WebDAV

Sharing your files

To share your files, just copy the files you want to share to the Public folder on your iDisk.

To share your files just give your .Mac member name and Public folder password (if you use one) to others so that they can connect to your Public folder or use your file sharing page.

Note: If you're using Mac OS X 10.3 or later and iDisk synchronization is turned on, be sure that the iDisk on your computer is synchronized with the iDisk on .Mac.

Connecting to someone's Public folder

Using a web browser

You can open a .Mac member's Public folder to see and copy files. If the member has set access privileges to read-write, you can also add and remove files.

  1. In your web browser, go to:

    http://idisk.mac.com/membername-Public

(Where "membername" is the other person's .Mac member name. For example if the member name is "janesmith1234abcd", you would connect to http://idisk.mac.com/janesmith1234abcd-Public.)
  2. If their Public folder is protected, enter a name of "public" and public password (which is provided to you by the .Mac member). You need to know the member's public password in order to read from or write to the folder.

Using Mac OS X

Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4, 10.5 or later

  1. Choose iDisk from the Go menu, then choose Other User's Public Folder from the submenu.
  2. Type the member name of the person whose Public folder you want to open in the Member Name field, then click Connect.
  3. If a password is required, type it in the Password field and click OK. The person's Public folder opens on your desktop.

If you're using Mac OS X 10.1 or 10.2

  1. Choose Connect To Server from the Finder's Go menu and type http://idisk.mac.com/membername-Public (where "membername" is the person's .Mac member name).
  2. If the Public folder is protected with a password, type "public" in the username field and type the Public folder password in the password field.

Using Windows

If you're using Windows Vista

Use iDisk on the web as explained above.

If you're using Windows XP

Use iDisk Utility for Windows XP to open someone's Public folder. If you are unable to connect to a password-protected Public folder with Internet Explorer 7, use iDisk on the web as explained above.

You can download the iDisk Utility for Windows XP by going to (http://www.apple.com/support/dotmac/idisk/) and clicking iDisk Utility on the left side.

If you're using Windows 2000

  1. Open My Computer, choose Map Network Drive from the Tools menu, then click "Web folder or FTP site."
  2. Enter the following as the location to add: http://idisk.mac.com/membername-Public? (where membername is the other person's .Mac member name).

If you're using Windows 98

  1. Open My Computer, double-click the Web Folders icon, then double-click Add Web Folder.
  2. Enter the following as the location to add: http://idisk.mac.com/membername-Public? (where membername is the other person's .Mac member name).

Using WebDAV

If you're using a WebDAV application, including a Linux computer, enter the following as the location to open: http://idisk.mac.com/membername-Public? (where membername is the other person's .Mac member name).
