What do I need to get started using the Nike + iPod system?
You need:

  • An iPod nano or iPod touch (2nd generation)
  • The Nike + iPod Sport Kit  if using an iPod nano or the Nike + iPod Sensor if using an iPod touch (2nd generation)
  • Nike+ ready shoes
  • iTunes 8 or later

The Nike + iPod Sport Kit is designed for running and walking. Nike+ ready shoes are highly recommended, as they have a specially engineered pocket in the midsole of the shoe for the Nike + iPod Sensor. The Nike + iPod system works with any iPod nano running the latest software or iPod touch (2nd generation).

What are the system and software requirements of the Nike + iPod Sport Kit?

  • iPod nano software version 1.2 or later
  • iPod touch (2nd generation) software version 2.1 or later
  • A Windows PC or Mac OS X computer running the latest iTunes.

Where can I get more information about the Nike+ ready shoes?

Please see nikeplus.com for more details.

When I’m running, what will I hear through my headphones?

You will hear the music, audiobook, or podcast that you have selected to play while working out.

The Nike + iPod application is able to provide audible feedback in real-time about the time, distance, pace, or calories burned in your current workout. The iPod nano or iPod touch (2nd generation) playback volume is reduced as the spoken feedback begins and is ramped back up to its original level when the update is complete.

Can I choose when to hear audible feedback?

Yes. You can always get real-time voice feedback by:

  • Pressing the Center button on your iPod nano during your workout.
  • Pressing the Home button on your iPod touch (2nd generation) when iPod is in sleep mode during your workout.

Goal-based workouts also provide periodic updates (for example, every half-mile).

How do I choose which voice I hear?

You can choose a female or male voice:

  • iPod nano: Choose Nike+iPod > Settings and set Spoken Feedback to Male, Female or Off.
  • iPod touch (2nd generation): Tap Settings > Nike+iPod and set Spoken Feedback to Male, Female or Off.

If spoken feedback is turned off, you can still get spoken feedback manually.

Workout Data and nikeplus.com

When I’m running, what information do I see on my iPod nano or iPod touch (2nd generation)?

Depending on the type of workout that you’ve selected, you’ll see information relating to elapsed time, current pace, distance covered, or calories burned. On your iPod nano, you can also see the Title/Artist/Album information of the song you are listening to.

How do I see my workout data when I’ve finished my run?

After completing your run, you’ll see a complete summary of all the data captured for your run (for example, date, time, total distance, duration, pace, and calories burned) on your iPod nano or iPod touch (2nd generation). This workout data will be stored on your iPod. To see the workouts:

  • iPod nano: Choose Nike+iPod > History

  • iPod touch (2nd generation): Tap the Nike + iPod and then tap the History button on the bottom right.

You can also see your latest workout data and workout history data in iTunes when connecting your iPod nano or iPod touch (2nd generation) and selecting the Nike + iPod tab.

iTunes does not store all your workout data or history on your computer. iTunes uploads your workout data to nikeplus.com so that you can keep track of your workouts. For more information on how to upload your workout data and track your progress on nikeplus.com, read the following article.

How large are the workout data files? Will I need to remove songs if I plan to run a lot?

The workout data files saved on your iPod nano or iPod touch (2nd generation) are very small compared to even a single song so you shouldn't need to remove any songs.

How do I sync my workout data to nikeplus.com?

To learn how to sync workout data to nikeplus.com, please see Nike + iPod: Uploading your workout data and tracking your progress at nikeplus.com.
