Summary

If you have issues with your iPod touch, try these tips first.

Products Affected

iPod touch

  • Power / Battery
  • Display
  • Audio
  • Issue not resolved
  • Power / Battery

Battery does not appear to charge

    1. Verify the power source being used is working properly.
    2. If connecting to a computer's USB port, verify it is a high-powered USB 2.0 port. Note: The USB ports on most keyboards don't provide enough power, so if you're connecting iPod touch to a keyboard, make sure it has a high-powered USB 2.0 port.
    3. Verify the computer is turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPod touch is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPod touch battery may drain.
    4. Try another USB port.
    5. Try charging from a USB charger if available.
    6. If that does not help, try another USB cable if available.

    Battery life seems short

    1. Click (www.apple.com/batteries/ipods.html ) for tips on how to prolong iPod touch battery life.
    2. If the screen shows a low-battery image, iPod touch is low on power and needs to charge for up to ten minutes before you can use it.
    3. If you are charging using your computer, don't connect iPod touch to the keyboard, unless the keyboard has high-powered USB 2.0 ports.
    4. Verify the computer is turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPod touch is connected to a computer that's not turned or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPod touch battery may drain.

    Will not power on

    1. Try charging the iPod touch for 10 minutes or more, by connecting the iPod to your computer (not your keyboard) using the included USB cable or to an Apple USB power adapter. Note: If iPod touch is connected to a computer that’s turned off or in sleep or standby mode, the iPod touch battery may drain instead of charge. Important: If iPod touch is very low on power, it may display one of the following low-battery images indicating that iPod touch needs to charge for up to ten minutes before you can use it. If iPod touch is extremely low on power, the display may be blank for up to two minutes before one of the low-battery images appears.
    2. While connected to a power source, try to reset the iPod touch. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until either the Apple logo or battery symbol appears. If the battery symbol appears, continue to charge iPod touch until it is fully charged.
    3. If the iPod touch still doesn't power on, then restore in recovery mode.

    Display

    Display image issues

This can include white screen, bright or dark pixels, lines in video, or sections of video missing.

    1. Turn iPod touch off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
    2. Verify the issue is not content related, by viewing different content.
    3. If the image is too dark, adjust the brightness. In General Settings choose Brightness and slide the slider.

Display does not go into wide-screen mode

    1. Open a web page or video and try turning iPod touch on its side to see if it goes into wide-screen
    2. If that doesn't work, try another web page or video.

Note: Not all applications on iPod touch use wide-screen mode. Videos are automatically in wide-screen mode on when in iPod and YouTube.

    Touchscreen not working

See this document for tips on using the touchscreen.

    1. The current iPod application may not be responding (frozen), press and hold the Home button below the screen for at least six seconds, until the application you were using quits.
    2. If that doesn't work, turn iPod touch off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPod touch for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
    3. If that doesn't work, reset iPod touch. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    4. Clean the iPod touch screen with the cleaning cloth that came in the box with iPod touch.

    Audio

    No sound through headphones1

    1. Verify there's no debris in the headphone port.
    2. Plug and unplug the headphones. Reconnect headphones and verify the connector is pushed in all the way.
    3. Check the volume setting on your iPod touch.
    4. If you are trying to listen to music and cannot hear any audio, make sure that the music is not paused.
    5. Make sure the latest version of iTunes is installed on the computer that you are syncing the iPod touch with (songs purchased from the iTunes Store using earlier versions of iTunes won't play).
    6. Try another set of Apple headphones.
    7. Try a different song or video.
    8. Check other content, such as videos, to see if they exhibit the same audio issues.

    1. Avoiding Hearing Damage
Permanent hearing loss may occur if the receiver, earbuds, headphones, speakerphone, or earpieces are used at high volume. Set the volume to a safe level. You can adapt over time to a higher volume of sound that may sound normal but can be damaging to your hearing. If you experience ringing in your ears or muffled speech, stop listening and have your hearing checked. The louder the volume, the less time is required before your hearing could be affected. Hearing experts suggest that to protect your hearing:
      • Limit the amount of time you use the receiver, earbuds, headphones, speakerphone, or earpieces at high volume.
      • Avoid turning up the volume to block out noisy surroundings.
      • Turn the volume down if you can't hear people speaking near you.
For information about how to set a maximum volume limit on iPod touch, see the iPod touch Features Guide.
