MobileMe: How to reset sync data

Summary

Occasionally, syncing with MobileMe may not behave as expected. Sync may take longer than expected, you may get an alert about inconsistent data, or data may not sync successfully between computers.

When troubleshooting these situations, resetting sync data on MobileMe may be a good step to take. This clears out all current sync data on MobileMe and replaces it with the data from your computer. For example, you would not want to do this if all your up-to-date information is on MobileMe and not your computer.

Products Affected

MobileMe, MobileMe Sync, Microsoft Windows, iPhone, iPod touch

Important: Resetting sync data is not an appropriate troubleshooting step to solve calendar sync issues. Instead, please see Troubleshooting MobileMe Calendar issues.

If you reset the sync data, be sure that you reset it from the computer that has the most up-to-date information on it. Here are some examples:

  • If the most up-to-date data is on MobileMe, you should analyze your options very carefully:
    • If you have up-to-date data on your computer as well as MobileMe, you should back up the data on your computer and then attempt to sync from MobileMe to your computer. You can do this either in your standard user or another user account.
    • If you do not have any important sync data stored locally on your computer, you can attempt to sync from MobileMe to your computer, replacing the data on your computer with what is on MobileMe. If you're unclear about what to do in this situation, contact MobileMe Support for assistance.
  • If the most up-to-date data is on your computer, you would want to follow the instructions below to reset the sync data on MobileMe and replace it with the data found on your computer.

Additional Information

After resetting, other computers syncing with MobileMe will display an alert the next time they sync the data on MobileMe that has been reset.  Generally, choosing to merge is recommended, but if this does not resolve your issue, you may need to replace the data on your other computers with data from MobileMe.

Resetting data on MobileMe will delete all sync data from the MobileMe web apps and any iPhone/iPod touch and replace it with the data from the computer you performed the reset from.  Any contacts with a specific ringtone may lose that setting.
