Making sure your Windows PC recognizes your FireWire or USB card

When troubleshooting an issue with connecting your iPod to a Windows PC, it is important to verify that the USB or FireWire card that you are connecting your iPod to is functioning properly. Review the steps below to verify that your USB or FireWire card is correctly recognized by your Windows PC.

Verifying USB Operation
- From the Start menu, right-click the My Computer/Computer icon and choose Properties from the shortcut menu. The System Properties window opens.
- Windows XP and Windows 2000: Click the Hardware tab.
Windows Vista: Click Device Manager. If Windows needs your permission to continue, click Continue. - In the Device Manager section of the Hardware tab window, click Device Manager. The Device Manager window opens.
- Double-click the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" entry.
- Double-click the name of each USB Host Controller that appears under the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" entry. A window with the name of the installed USB Host Controller appears.
- If necessary, click the General tab. If the USB card is working correctly, you should see "This device is working properly" in the Device Status field.
Verifying FireWire Operation
- From the Start menu, right-click the My Computer/Computer icon and choose Properties from the shortcut menu. The System Properties window opens.

- Double-click the "IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers" entry.
- Double-click the name of the installed FireWire card when it appears under the "IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers" entry. A window entitled with the name of the installed FireWire card appears.
- If necessary, click the General tab. If the FireWire card is working correctly, you should see "This device is working properly" in the Device Status field.
