Follow these steps if you're not sure what version of Windows you have:
- Choose Start > Control Panel
- Click "Classic View" on the left hand side, then open the "System" control panel
- Look for an identifier in the window that appears that says "system type"; if the value says "64 bit edition," make sure you're using iTunes 7.6 or later.
Note: The iTunes installer for 64-bit editions of Windows Vista is named iTunes64Setup.exe instead of iTunesSetup.exe. If you download the iTunes installer from apple.com/itunes/download using a 64-bit edition of Windows Vista and the file is iTunesSetup.exe, your browser may not have correctly identified your Windows version or you may have selected the 32-bit edition from the download page. Try downloading iTunes again using a different browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari.
Windows XP
Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is not supported by iTunes. Features may or may not work correctly. One example is reading or writing to an optical drive (CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-RW). It's also possible iTunes for Windows may not successfully install.
Follow these steps if you're not sure what version of Windows you have:
- Open "My Computer" and choose About Windows from the Help menu.
- Look for an identifier that indicates "x64 edition" in the window that appears.
