iPhone, iPhone Activation in iTunes

What You Need to Get Started

To activate and use an original iPhone, you need:

  • An Internet connection
  • An existing U.S. iTunes Store account or a new U.S. iTunes Store account (major credit card may be required)
  • A valid Social Security number and a U.S. billing address (Your social security number is required for both AT&T credit checking as well as to allow AT&T to move your wireless number from your previous carrier to your new account).
  • iTunes 7.3 or later, available at www.itunes.com. Apple recommends using the latest version.
  • A Mac or a PC with a USB 2.0 port and one of the following operating systems:
    • Mac OS X version 10.4.10 or later
    • Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later
    • Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate edition

Before activating

  • Check Voicemail

Before you activate your original iPhone, make sure you listen to your current voicemails. If you are an existing AT&T customer, activation will delete your existing voicemails. If you are transferring an existing number from another wireless operator, existing voice mails will not be transferred.

  • About SIM cards

If you already have a SIM card note that not all SIM cards work with iPhone. For best results, use the SIM card included with your original iPhone.

  • Rate plans and coverage areas

For a basic understanding of AT&T Rate Plans in general, go here:
    www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/cell-phone-plans/

You will also see the different rate plan options during the iPhone activation process in iTunes.

To use the AT&T Coverage Viewer, go to www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/ and enter your location to see coverage in your area.

If you have a question about AT&T's network or rate plans for iPhone, contact AT&T.

For any other question about iPhone, contact Apple.

Activating iPhone

To start using your original iPhone, you must activate it using iTunes and sign up for a new two year AT&T wireless service account. You can transfer your current phone number to iPhone, or get a new one. If you already have an AT&T account, you may be able to upgrade your account to work with iPhone. You must be at least 18 years old to open an AT&T account.

Please make sure to check the email address that you provided during "Activating your iPhone" in iTunes. Apple or AT&T may need to contact you for additional information.

If you experience an unexpected issue, check to make sure your computer's time and date are set correctly, and then try again.

Activate iPhone

  1. Download and install the latest version of iTunes from www.itunes.com.
  2. Connect iPhone to a USB 2.0 port on your Mac or PC (not on the keyboard) using the included dock and cable. iTunes opens automatically.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions in iTunes to activate original iPhone and sync your contacts, calendars, music, photos, podcasts, videos, email accounts, and web bookmarks.

Important: Your iPhone may be able to receive calls in as little as 15 minutes after activation. If you are migrating your current phone number, it can take longer—up to several days, depending on the type and status of your former service account—before calls are routed to iPhone. In the meantime, you can make calls and use iPhone’s other features.
