To find the serial number using software
On most computers with Mac OS X you can find the serial number in the About This Mac window.
To find the serial number located on the computer
If the MacBook is not turned on, look at the bottom case or in the battery bay depending on your MacBook model.

The MacBook (13-inch, Late 2009) has the serial number on the bottom case, as shown below.
