iWeb: Using your own domain name

Summary

If you've purchased your own domain name (for example: www.yourDomainName.com, www.yourDomainName.co.uk, or www.yourDomainName.me) from a service provider, you can use that address for websites published to MobileMe with iWeb ’08 or ’09.

Products Affected

MobileMe, iWeb '08 (2.x), iWeb '09

Your domain registrar will need to allow for setting the CNAME to "web.me.com". Follow instructions from your domain registrar for setting the "www" CNAME, which should be done prior to configuring your web site published in MobileMe Personal Domain configuration.

Follow these steps to use your own domain name:

  1. Open iWeb.
  2. Make sure you’re connected to the Internet.
  3. From the File menu, choose Set Up Personal Domain on MobileMe.

  4. When the MobileMe login window appears, type in your account name and password and click Log In.

  5. Read the information in the Domain Settings window and click Add Domain.

"Personal Domain, If you own a web domain, you can enjoy one-click publishing from iWeb '08 directly to your personal web address by having MobileMe host your domain name..."

  6. Enter your personal domain name in the Domain Name and Confirm Domain text fields and click Continue.

  7. Follow the instructions in the window and go to the website of your registrar. You will be asked to enter your “www” CNAME. The CNAME for your domain is “web.me.com”.  Be very careful of the domain name you enter, as some registrars require a period at the end of your domain name, as in "web.me.com."

    Note
: Some domain registrars require you to contact them to make this kind of CNAME adjustment. Contact your own domain registrar for more information.

As stated in the window’s text, it may take up to 48 hours for the change to occur. Click Done.

  8. The final window displays your domain name. You have the option of removing the domain or going back to your account settings.
