Apple Remote Desktop: How to disable build_hd_index

Summary

Learn how you can prevent the build_hd_index process from running.

Products Affected

Apple Remote Desktop 2.x, Apple Remote Desktop 3.X

When adding a computer in Remote Desktop, you can disable the "Apply default data upload schedule" option to prevent this process from running on the client computer.

You can also Get Info on a computer in Remote Desktop Admin and disable the Data Collection options (that is, Collect Application Usage Data and Collect User Accounting Data).

Note: With Remote Desktop 3.2.2 or earlier, these settings are specific to the user running Remote Desktop Admin rather than the client. If more than one administrator has this computer in their list, each admin will need to adjust their Data Collection settings. With Remote Desktop 3.3 or later, these settings are now computer-specific. Any administrator may view and change the client's settings.

Additional Information

The settings are stored in the following preference file:

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ARDAgent.plist

You can remove this file and allow a new one to be created to temporarily disable the process. You'll still want to adjust the Data Collection settings on each admin system in order to prevent the settings from being written again.
