This article contains a software link to LaserWriter 8.6.1.

This software was released by Apple on March 24, 1999 and is available for download from the Apple Support Web site at http://support.apple.com/downloads/.

Description:

This software includes version 8.6.1 of the LaserWriter printer driver. Laserwriter 8.6.1 adds support for secure printing to the AppleShare IP 6.1 (or later) Print Server. There are no other changes from LaserWriter 8.6. If you do not have Mac OS 8.5.x and wish to use a recent version of the LaserWriter printer driver, refer to LaserWriter 8.6: Read Me.

Secure printing may be configured to require both a user name and password or just a user name to setup and spool jobs for printing. When you create a desktop printer for a secure print queue, you are presented with a dialog for entering your name and password if required. This dialog optionally allows you to save this account information so that it can be automatically used when printing documents from an application. If you choose not to save the required account information during setup, you can enter this information in the Security panel of the Printing dialog when printing from an application.

Known Issues with AppleShare IP 6.1 Print Server

When enabling or disabling the Require Password for Printing checkbox, it is necessary to disable and re-enable the Enable Security checkbox or restart the Print Server to have the new password setting take affect. Failure to disable and re-enable the Enable Security checkbox after enabling the Require Password for Printing checkbox can cause the LaserWriter 8.6.1 driver to refuse to allow a user to enter their password. When LaserWriter 8.6.1 is used with non-secure print queues of the Print Server, printer descriptions may be incorrectly determined. This can result in incorrect printer icons displayed in the Chooser and slower spooling performance.
