Adjust voices for VoiceOver, Speak Screen, and Speak Selection using iOS 8

Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch starts out using a compact voice for VoiceOver, Speak Screen, and Speak Selection. With iOS 8, you now have a number of options for the voices you can use for speech.

Adjust VoiceOver voices

  1. Tap Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Speech.
  2. Choose your default dialect. The options here depend on the language your device is set to use.
  3. Choose Default—this is the compact voice—or Enhanced Quality.
Enhanced-quality voices can be 100 MB or larger. Connect your device to Wi-Fi to download and install one of these voices.

With VoiceOver, you can enable multiple voices, switch between Compact and Enhanced Quality (without needing to download the voice again), and adjust the speaking rate for each voice.

Follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Speech.
  2. Tap Add New Language.
  3. Tap the language and dialect you want. This will take you back to the Speech screen.
  4. Tap the More Info button for the language.
  5. Choose either Default or Enhanced Quality. Choosing Enhanced Quality will start the download if the device is connected to a Wi-Fi network and the voice hasn't been downloaded yet.
  6. Move the Speech Rate slider to adjust the rate of speech the voice uses.

Choose a voice for Speak Screen and Speak Selection

  1. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Speech.
  2. Enable Speak Selection or Speak Screen (or both).
  3. Select Voices.
  4. Choose the one voice and dialect you would like both Speak Screen and Speak Selection to use.

Remove a downloaded voice

If you aren't using an enhanced-quality voice, you can remove it. Here's how:

  1. Tap Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Speech.
  2. Tap the More Info button for the language you want to remove.
  3. Tap Edit.
  4. Tap Delete Enhanced Quality button, and then tap Delete.
