OS X: Using me.com or mac.com IDs with AIM in iChat requires OS X v10.7.2 or later

To ensure a secure and reliable experience, customers using a mac.com or me.com ID to login to the AIM service via iChat must upgrade their Mac to OS X version 10.7.2 or later by June 30, 2014 to continue using the AIM service. 

iChat features, including text messaging via AIM, video chat, and screen sharing will no longer be available when used with a mac.com or me.com ID on systems running 10.7.1 or earlier after June 30, 2014. Follow the instructions below to continue using AIM services with your me.com or mac.com ID.

Determine which version of OS X you are using

  1. Click the Apple icon in the upper left hand corner
  2. Click ‘About This Mac”
  3. Look at the version number just below the Apple as highlighted in the screenshot below:

If your version of OS X is 10.7.1 or earlier, please follow the appropriate instructions for your version below:

OS X Leopard 10.5

  1. Check to see if your Mac is supported by Mavericks by clicking here.
  2. If your Mac is supported, please purchase Snow Leopard from the Apple Online Store. If you do not wish to purchase Snow Leopard or if you want to continue using Leopard, please read the Creating a New AIM ID section below.
  3. Complete the Snow Leopard upgrade and then follow these instructions to upgrade to Mavericks

OS X Snow Leopard 10.6

  1. Check to see if your Mac is supported by Mavericks by clicking here.
  2. If your Mac is supported, please follow these instructions to upgrade your Snow Leopard system to Mavericks.
  3. If not, please read the Creating a new AIM ID section below.

OS X Lion 10.7

  1. Follow these instructions to upgrade to Mavericks.

If you wish to continue using Lion, simply upgrade to OS X 10.7.5 by using Software Update:

  1. Click the Apple icon
  2. Choose Software Update to install OS X Lion 10.7.5, the latest version.
  3. After updating, open iChat.
  4. Choose iChat > Preferences and click the Accounts button in the preferences window.
  5. Select your iChat account from the list of available accounts.
  6. Click the Server Settings tab and make sure that the option to use SSL with your account is selected. 
  7. Close the iChat preferences window.

Creating a new AIM ID

If your system cannot be upgraded to OS X 10.7.2 or later, you can create a new AIM ID to use with your current version of OS X by following these steps:

  1. Create a new AIM ID from the AOL website.
  2. Add this new account to iChat by following the instructions in this article.
  3. After setting up your AIM account in iChat, Open iChat preferences.
  4. Click the Accounts button in the preferences window, then select your new AIM account from the list of accounts.
  5. Click the Server Settings tab and make sure that the option to use SSL is selected for your new AIM account.
  6. Close the iChat preferences window.
  7. Creating a new Apple ID requires you to re-add your buddies to your new buddy list. Re-add your buddies to your by following the instructions in this article.
  8. Remove your old mac.com account from iChat preferences.
