Apple Service Training and Certification FAQ

The following article addresses common questions on changes to Apple Service Training and Certification programs.

What is happening to Apple Service Certifications?

On June 23, 2013, AppleCare is updating its Service Training and Certification program. This update is based on feedback from the field and will ensure a simpler and easier way to create and maintain service technician credentials.

 

Changes include the following:

  • No more ACMT recertifications: All service technicians with existing ACMT certifications as of June 23 will be granted a new ACMT certification that eliminates yearly recertification exams. This new certification will allow the same ordering of service parts as the preceding ACMT certification and will not expire. 
  • New exam resources: On October 1, 2013 all AppleCare exams started to be delivered by Pearson VUE. You can find details on the Pearson VUE exam process in Accessing Pearson Vue Service Exams.
  • Testing centers not required for exams: All AppleCare Service exams will be available online. You will be able to take these exams without the need to travel to a testing center.
  • No more proctored exams: Initial ACMT certification exams will no longer require exam proctors for exams taken at training centers.

Why is this happening?

AppleCare wants technicians to be qualified before servicing new products that require special handling. Since new products often require new procedures and tools, special training and exams are created for these products. Passing exams are necessary in order to obtain service parts.

 

How does this transition work?

If you are already ACMT certified, you do not have to do anything. You will see a new ACMT certification in your Global Certification Exchange records on June 23. This new certification replaces the previous ACMT certification. At a later point, the legacy ACMT certification will be retired. This will not impact your access to service parts.

 

If you are in the process of becoming ACMT certified, you should continue your studies and complete the ACMT exams. If you need to be ACMT certified before June 23, use the existing exams. If you need to be ACMT certified on or after June 23, use the new online exams available after that date.

 

What is the impact on individual product qualifications?

There is no impact on individual product qualifications. Those exams and GSX qualifications remain the same as they are now.

 

I need to recertify ACMT before June 23rd. What should I do?

Recertify with the existing exams. After you do so, your ACMT certified status will be permanent.

 

My recertification date is after June 23rd. What do I need to do?

You do not need to do anything.  Your records will be transitioned to the new ACMT certification.

 

How do these changes help me?

  • You will no longer need to recertify every year in order to service existing products. 
  • You will be able to take all of your exams online from your own computer—no travel to testing centers is necessary.

What happens to promo codes for exams?

Promo codes will be available for the online ACMT certification exams. The promo code article in GSX will include all updates.

 

How does this program work for new technicians?

New technicians will take ACMT exams plus individual product exams as required for their work. These exams will be taken from the technician's own computer.

 

How does the new program impact my ability to order service parts?

There is no impact on your parts ordering. The process will remain the same as it is currently.

 

Are there any changes in exam costs?

All exams will cost the same as they do now. However, you will no longer need to take yearly recertification exams.  

 

How will ACMT printed certificates be handled?

We are investigating options for ACMT certificates and will be publishing updates concerning them in the near future within this article.
