Mac OS X: Software installations require administrator password

Installing software in Mac OS X requires an administrator account name and password. When installing software that uses the Installer included with Mac OS X, Installer displays a dialog with an authorization message (even if you're the only person using the computer):

"You need an Administrator password to install the software. Click the lock to make changes."

  1. Click the lock icon. An authentication dialog appears.
  2. Enter your administrator account name (if necessary) and password. If you are the only person using the computer, this is the name use to log in to the computer. If you log in automatically, you can find the account name(s) in Accounts preferences (or User preferences in Mac OS X 10.2.8 or earlier).

  3. Click OK. Installer begins the installation process.
