AirPort Time Capsule: Time Machine backups may not mount; "Backup volume cannot be found" may appear

When using your AirPort Time Capsule for Time Machine backups in Mac OS X v10.5.7 or later, the AirPort Time Capsule backup volume may not mount and Time Machine may not be able to back up to it.

This alert may appear: "Backup volume cannot be found".

This can happen if the AirPort Time Capsule disk has a long name. Rename the backup volume with AirPort Utility:

  1. Open AirPort Utility (in /Applications/Utilities).
  2. Click your AirPort Time Capsule's icon.
  3. Click Edit in the Airport Time Capsule information window.
  4. Enter the password for the AirPort Time Capsule if prompted.
  5. Click the Disks tab, then the volume name next to the disk icon.
  6. Highlight the volume name.
  7. Enter a name for the volume that is less than 27 characters long.
  8. Click Update. The AirPort Time Capsule will restart.
  9. Open System Preferences.
  10. Choose View > Time Machine.
  11. Select the AirPort Time Capsule volume.
