Make in-app purchases

Many apps let you make in-app purchases to buy extra content (like bonus game levels or map experience points) and subscriptions. You can make in-app purchases on your Mac or iOS device using your Apple ID.

Get started

You can buy extra content and subscriptions in apps on your devices.

If you're using a Mac with OS X Mountain Lion, you can buy extra content in apps, but not subscriptions.

Types of in-app purchases

When you buy extra content or subscriptions, you'll make one of these in-app purchases:

Type of in-app purchase Example Description
Consumable
  • Extra health
  • Extra experience points

You need to buy these items every time you want them, and you can't download them again for free.

Non-consumable
  • Bonus game levels
  • City guide maps

You buy these items one time, and you can transfer them to other devices that are associated with your Apple ID.

Non-renewing subscriptions
  • One-month subscriptions
  • Location service subscriptions

You can buy these items again after your subscription ends.

Auto-renewing subscriptions
  • Weekly newspaper subscriptions
  • Weekly magazine subscriptions

You can buy these items with different renewal options. Learn more about auto-renewing subscriptions.

Both free and paid apps offer in-app purchases. If an app offers in-app purchases, you will see Offers In-App Purchases or In-App Purchases directly below the Price, Buy or Get button. On iOS, you'll also see it mentioned below the title of the app.

Make an in-app purchase

When you find extra content or a subscription that you want to buy in an app:

  1. Select the in-app purchase.
  2. Tap Buy to confirm. You might need to enter your Apple ID password.

If you remove and reinstall an app, or install an app on a new device, you'll keep your non-consumable purchases, but you might lose your consumable purchases. For example, if you install a game from your iPhone on your iPod touch, the game levels will sync, but not the extra ammo or experience points.

If you lose a non-consumable purchase, you might be able to download it again for free. Learn how to restore in-app purchases.

If you have trouble making an in-app purchase, make sure that your payment information is up to date.
